Heartsounds have been one of my favorite bands over the past 2 years, so when I heard they were going to be releasing another full length in 2011, it immediately became one of my most anticipated for the year. Their style can best be described as modern pop punk mixed with older, technical bands such as Propagandhi and Strung Out. The most unique feature about the band is that they feature two lead vocalists, Ben and Laura, who complement each other VERY well.
This is the band’s second full length album, and right off the bat you can tell it’s going to kick your ass. It is much faster and louder than their first album, Until We Surrender. The opener “Every Second Counts” begins with a mid-tempo guitar line then begins to melt your face with some serious riffage that is played at the speed of light. “Drifter” was the first song released off this album, and it will go down as one of my favorite tracks of 2011. “No, it shouldn’t take a miracle to get out of bed.” is a line that gets stuck in my head for days at a time. Guest vocals do make an appearance on this album, as Jason Cruz (Strung Out) sings on “Elements”.
The guitar work on “Race To The Bottom” might be my favorite thing in the world right now. I hear stuff that’d fit on an old NOFX album as well as a big metal influence with the shredding and harmonizing. I love when bands challenge themselves and end up pulling it off flawlessly. One of my favorite tracks this band has written.
The album does slow down a bit in the final few tracks (9-11) and doesn’t have the “wow” factor a lot of the previous songs had, however “Nothing Happens For A Reason” is an awesome, awesome ender.
You can tell they took their time with every single song on this record… hopefully they reap the benefits and start to blow up. They deserve it.
