It turns out I forgot to post a song of the day yesterday… so here’s a second one for today!
Today’s second selection comes from Frank Tovey, aka Fad Gadget. Fad Gadget, forgotten by many, was an important figure in the early days of Mute Records, as he was the first artist signed to the label. Tovey’s use of synthesizers, every day objects, and often dark and expressionless vocals remind me a darker and more experimental 80s David Bowie mixed with Joy Division mixed with a little Depeche Mode and new wave.
The song I decided to choose is called “Love Parasite”. The lyrics are very repetitive, but I find the instrumentals and musical structure to be very creative and catchy. The song itself, though, doesn’t capture Tovey’s musical array, but suffices as a gateway to one of Mute’s early artists.
