I found Motion City Soundtrack in college. Like a lot of people, “Commit This To Memory” was my introduction to the Minnesota pop punk band. I liked them immediately, thanks to catchy guitar and synth riffs. But the lyrics made me a true fan. Self-deprecation, self-medication, self-destruction – an admission of how our generation copes – laid bare for all to hear.

Now, after almost 20 years and 6 studio albums, Motion City Soundtrack announced Friday they are calling it quits.

It has been a quiet winter for us. We’ve had some time at home after a very busy 2015. With this time, we’ve been able to think about the past, present, and future of Motion City Soundtrack. All of this thinking has lead to several conversations, and these conversations have lead us to a very bittersweet realization: We have no idea what the future holds, but for now we are done. Needless to say, we’re feeling all the feels – you may be as well. If so, or if you’ve ever been touched by our music, we ask you to come out and sing along with us one last time in 2016. Please stay tuned for a very special final tour announcement on Monday. Click the link in our bio to sign up to our email list and be the first to hear the news. We really hope to see each and every one of you out there one more time. Thanks for all the love over the years. It really means a lot to us – and it always will.

Today starts a new chapter in Electric Mohawk’s history. My name is Rob, and I was a contributor when Brett was running the site. I wrote a few posts here and there, but due to schedules and availability, the site was put on standby. I am here to bring it back. What does that mean for EM? Glad you asked.

The spirit will stay the same. This blog is about music. The good, the bad, the unknown and everything in between. But the focus for now will be mainly on Milwaukee, WI. It is my home, and I truly believe that you should write what you know. Besides, we are spoiled here in the Brew City. We host the largest music festival in the world. We have untapped talent like GGOOLLDD, Kane Place Record Club, Pay the Devil to name only a few. National acts stop through on a regular basis to play our historic venues like The Pabst Theater, The Riverside, The Eagles Ballroom, Shank Hall, I could go on forever.

I can’t do this alone though. Love music? I want to hear from you. I need others to write. Share your opinion with me. And everyone else.

As Daft Punk put it, “Like the legend of the phoenix. All ends with beginnings.” And that means I will be taking up the mantle that is Electric Mohawk. I remember when Brett asked me if I wanted to contribute. Over the years, I did a few articles and playlists, but I didn’t have a lot of time to contribute much more.

When Brett announced he was shutting down EM, I was sad. I understood why. Managing a blog can be a full time job. When you already have one of those, it gets hard to split time. But I missed it. Having an avenue to share new bands, my opinions on music and general love for it.

So I talked to Brett. And here we are. Getting the band back together. Not sure what direction we will go, as I am more of a punk and ska guy, but we’ll have fun on the way. So stay tuned.
